Naked Church
In this sermon series, we will be taking a thirty-six week journey through the book of 1 Corinthians. We will be looking at what it actually means to be church, what idolary is, and how to live out the Christian life. Every week we will look at core doctrinal issues of the faith, and core pronciples with which we should live. Our prayer as a church is that at the end of this sermon series we will have a good grasp on what living as a Christian looks like today, and how we can do this in community.
For the next five weeks we will be looking at Spiritual Gifts. Below is the Chapter from Nate's Book Naked Church on Spiritual gitfs. Feel free to download it, give it to others, and use it in your own spiritual journey.
Spiritual Gifts Booklet- PDF
Sermon 26- Unwrapped
In this sermon we begin our look at Spiritual Gifts. Looking at 1 Corinthians 12:1-12 we see the reason for Spiritual Gifts, how God has designed them to be used, and how the church can be empowered by them to do the work God has called us to. We look spcifically this week at the gifts of Knowledge, Wisdom, Faith and Discernment.
Sermon 25- Naked Rest
In this sermon we again step out of our study of 1 Corinthians to look at Sabbath. We see how Sabbath is needed for us today, the Biblical reasons for Sabbath, and how we can incorporate a Sabbath into our week. Nate talks about how Sabbath was created for our good and a pleasure to take if we do it right. He also explains how even Sabbath ultimately points to Christ, in whom we find our ultimate rest.
Sermon 24- Naked Communion
This week we finish 1 Corinthians 11. We look at Paul's condemnation for the church at Corinth in thier taking of the Lord's Supper. We see why this was such a big deal for Paul and should be a big deal for us. We learn what it means to commune with God and how we should approach such a wonderful gift.
Sermon 23- Naked Heads
This week we get into some of the most controversial and misunderstood verses in 1 Corinthians. We look at 1 Corinthians 11:1-16. Nate explains gender roles as presented in the Bible and how they are meant for our good. Contrasting what the Bible has to say over and against what our culture today says abot men and women, and the culture of the 1950's, Nate explains the high calling of sex, sexuality, and gender for a christians. Questions were live texted in during the sermon. The questions and answers are in the audio file below.
Q and A audio- Naked Heads Q and A
Sermon 22- Naked Idols
This week we look at 1 Corinthians 10. We look at what idol worship and idolatry is. Nate explains that from a Biblical perspective, everyone is a worshipper fo something. The Bible doesn't ask, "Do you worship?" but rather, "What do you worship?" The quesiton then, according to Paul in 1 Corinthians, is the same question Moses possed to the Israelites when he said, "Chose this day who you will serve." The question is, will we serve and worship God or an idol? There is no other choice.
Sermon 21- Naked Mission
We are back in the book of 1 Corinthians 9 this week after our two week detour. We look at the end of chapter 9 and see how ministry is done. Nate preaches about how we all have a Missio Dei- a Mission from God, and this mission is to partner with Jesus in his plan to redeem a lost and broken world.
Sermon 20- Naked Church
In this sermon we look at what church is and what it was meant to be. We see how we are in a spiritual battle today, but that ultimately Jesus will be victorious. Finally, Nate talks about what the vision for Vita Nova is in light of a Biblical understanding of church.
Sermon 19- Naked Hope
This week we take a break form the Corinthians Study and jump to the book of Romans chapter 8. We look at what, or, more correctly, who Hope really is. This week and next week we are looking at why we are planting a church. Nate tells us what our hope is in, and what this world needs as seen from Paul's perspective.
Sermon 18- Naked FInances
In this sermon we look at 1 Corinthians 9. Nate talks about the Biblical perspective on money, remnding us that it is all about the gospel. We see how our money and our understanding of it is given by God to further his kingdom, giving Him glory and us pleasure.
Sermon 17- Eat Drink and Be Merry
In this sermon we pick up the second half of 1 Corinthians. Beggining in chapter 8 we look at why we should not eat meat slaughtered at a temple and offered to idols. Nate brings the principles behind this text into the 21st Century and we see that what Paul is really talking about is loving others above ourselves.
Sermon 16- Christmas, Creation and the Cross
On Vita Nova's first Christmas Eve service, Nate preached the Christmas narrative found in the Gospel of John. Looking at John 1, we see that Christmas did not begin at Jesus birth, but rather began before the foundations of the world. We see how Christmas makes no sense without the Cross, and how Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice even on the day of his birth.
Sermon 15- The First Christmas Caroll
In this Christmas sermon, Nate looks at Mary's Song - the first Christmas Carol ever. He tries to paint a picture of what it would have looked like for Mary- full of hardship, pain, and community banishment. In the midst of all of this Mary sings to God, saying her soul magnifies the Lord. May we all have this attitude at Christmas and all year round.
Sermon 14- 1 Corinthians 6:1-11
This is Matt Mirigians first sermon but he forgot to think of a clever title because he was devoting energy to preaching, so we will forgive him. Matt preached on the section of 1 Corinthians we skipped because of the sex and marriage sermons. Exploring 1 Corinthians 6:1-11, Matt explains what church can look like. He calls us to a high standard and exlains how it is our priviledge to give grace to each other in big and in small things.
Sermon 13- Called to Contentedness
In this sermon Nate ends the teaching on sex, singleness and marriage found in the book of 1 Corinthians. Exploring 1 Corinthians 7:25-40 we look at some guiding principles for living a single life and being happy in it - whether it is for a season or for life. This is also the last week that text messages were taken during service.
The questions are added to the end of this sermon.
Sermon 12- Naked and Unashamed
In this sermon we look at 1 Corinthians 7:1-17. From there Nate explains a theology of marriage and why in marriage "your body is not your own." We tackle touchy subjects like submission to our spouses, what people should look for in the person they are going to marry, and what it means die daily to yourself. The questions from the second service are at the end of this sermon. The first service questions did not get recorded - sorry.
Sermon 11- Porn-Again Christianity
(This sermon title was ripped off a book by Mark Driscoll by the same name.)
In this sermon Nate talks about 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. He explores sex, sexuality and sexual immorality. He teaches us about God's heart and passion for sexual purity as well as why it is such a big deal. The main theme is that people are not objects - they have souls. God looks at them with eyes of a Father who loves them. This is why sexual immorality is a huge topic. Nate also shows how the Cross and Christ free us from sexual immorality and restore our humanity.
The questions texted into Vita Nova during the sermon are at the end of this audio.
Sermon 10- Bare Bottom
In this sermon Nate Cartel explains what church discipline looks like and how it is actually a labor of love to be the church to each other. We look at 1 Corinthians 5:7-13 and see what principles we can glean from it. We see what church discipline actually means and explore the topics of mutual submission and authority. Also, for the next five weeks, Nate will take live text questions about the sermon from anyone in Vita Nova. That audio is below.
Sermon 10 Q and A- Bare Botton live Questions and Answers
This is a frank and candid discussion of the sermon from the Bare Bottom sermon. It should be noted this is not g-rated, as quesitons about sex and seual immorality were asked and answered honestly. The questions were not edited and were asked live after the sermon. Both sermons' questions have been combined in this audio.
Sermon 9- When Dad's Away the Kids Will Play
In this sermon Dave Bougoise preached on 1 Corinthians 5:1-5. In it he briefly explores church discipline, sexual brokeness and how the gosple of Jesus can heal. Dave is a member of Vita Nova and the leader of the evening service.
Sermon 8- Poorly Clothed, Richly Dressed
In this sermon we look at what real ministry looks like. Looking at 1 Corinthians 4:8-17 we see how the Prosperity Gospel and heresy had spread in Corinth and is ruining the church. Nate preached on what real Christianity looks like and the huge costs of being a disciple of Jesus.
Sermon 7- Peeling Off The Layers
This week we continue our study of Corinthians, finally leaving the idol of "community" and moving to the root of all idols, pride. We look at the pride of the Corinthian Church and how it was poisoning everything. Nate explains how we are not only saved by grace, but sustained through it as well. Grace is not just the foundation of our faith, but the life of it as well.
Sermon 6- Exposed Epidermis
Nate Cartel is back this week speaking about the rest of 1 Corinthians 3. He reminds us how this life is transitory, this world is transitory, all our riches are transitory. "It is all going to burn!" is really the mantra of the sermon. We explore what it means to have a kingdom perspective with wealth, time, and everything else. We also explore what Paul means by rewards in the end and why we should value them above all the riches of this world.
Sermon 5- Half Dressed
Kiril Zenchenko walks us through 1 Corinthians 3:1-9. He tells us how we are all needed in God's plan, how God uses mere people to co-labor with him in his plan of salvation, and how we can cooperate with God and each other.
Sermon 4- Streaking Through Town
Tommy Moore talks this week about 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 enlightening us as to how the Holy Spirit works in the world and in the life of the believer.
Sermon 3- Birthday Suit
Nate Cartel talks about what being real and exposed looks like. We look at 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 and look at how Paul planted the church at Corinth, and how we are to do church as well. We get to the root of being church and see why and how Jesus is at the center of it all.
Sermon 2- Showering Off
This week we look at the first Idol of the Corinthian Church - church itself, or more correctly, the people the church is following. In this very harsh sermon, Nates calls Vita Nova to repent of the idolatry we have fallen into. He also casts the vision for what church could and should be, as well as why Vita Nova was started. Be aware, this sermon is very harsh, and there is a lot of yelling.
Sermon 1- Stripping Down
This is the first sermon in our Naked Church sermon series. In it, Nate gives the background of the church at Corinth, the book of 1 Corinthians, and why the letter was written. The sermon examines the love in which Paul writes, the reasons for his writing, and the gifts God has given the Corinthians.
Welcome to the War:
In this sermon series we will be walking through the book of Acts. In it we hope to see how the early church began, was empowered by the Holy Spirit, and ultimately changed the world. We will see how the mission of God forcefully advanced from Jerusalem and made it to the heart of the Roman Empire, being thrust forward by the prodding and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Our prayer is that we would gain some wisdom and insight into how to plant churches, be the local church, love our town, and walk a Spirit filled life. We will spend the next 12 weeks looking at the book in seven sections.
Sermon 12- Final Destination
In the final week of the sermon series, we finish the book of Acts. We see Paul continuing to minister even through arrest and imprisonment. We also see how Jesus' words to his followers in Chapter 1 - that they would be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the Ends of the World - are fulfilled as Paul and the church reach Rome. We explore how big and good God is in light of the final journey of Paul.
Sermon 11- Master Plan
Nate Cartel finishes up our study of the church of Ephesus this week. We look at how Paul was called by God to leave the safety and security of his beloved city, and go to Jerusalem where he knew beatings and imprisonment awaited him. We see how even in this, God had a greater plan. We look at Paul's final words to the church and its elders, see how he loved them, and even when possibly faced with his own death, he was more worried about the church and its members.
Note: The sound recorder's batteries died 8 minutes into the sermon and had to be replaced. About 3 minutes of the audio were lost.
Sermon 10- Burn It All
In the final week of guest preachers, Tommy Moore, in his first sermon, continues to walk us through Paul's experience in Ephesus. We see how Jesus and Christians empowered by the Holy Spirit change people's lives dramatically. In this section, a riot is caused because the gospel has penetrated Ephesus so greatly even the economy has changed. We are challenged to do the three things Ephesian Christians were doing, one of which was burning away their old lives.
Sermon 9- Who Are You?
Dave Bourgeois gives his first sermon, opeing up Paul's third and final missionary journey. He begins our study of Ephesus, a town very similar in taste and philospohy to much of America today. In the sermon we see what principles we can glean from Paul's experience and how we can apply these lessons to our lives.
Sermon 8- The Schwarzenegger Scam
Kirill Zenchenko walks us through one of the more famous speeches given by Paul in the book of Acts. Examining Paul's strategies and meathods of church planting, and how Athens and Mars Hill was different, we see the need for community and comradery. He also explores how Mars Hill has parelles for us today, and what that means for ministry in the Pioneer Valley.
Sermon 7- Pray With a Gun
This week Ben Novello gives his first sermon. He talks about the first missionary journey in history and examines the motivations of Paul and Barnabas as they leave the safety and community of Antioch to bring the gospel to the world.
Sermon 6- Pride and Prejudices
This week we see how God is pushing His story into all the people's of the earth. We look at the Holy Spirit's plan to have the least likely of people to meet - Peter, a Jewish man, and Cornelius, a gentile. We see that God detests racism and prejudices and calls his church to a higher standard. We walk through Acts 10 and 11, seeing how God smashes old stereotypes in one fell swoop and calls us to do the same.
Sermon 5- Marching Orders
This week we look at the first missionary journey in history. We see how God used a seemingly bad situation to make a great impact, and how he did this with two of the least suspecting men in Scripture. We will also see how God has big plans for all of us, and we can fully claim the life he has predestined us to have.
Sermon 4- Casualties and Causality
One of the major questions in the human experience is, "Why do bad things happen?" Another question, usually immediatly following is, "If God is good, how can he let bad things happen? Is he good? Is he powerful?" In this sermon we look at the first Christian Martyr, Stephen, as recorded in Acts 7. We see that God is there when unjust suffering and evil occurs, and he is also very powerful. By looking at the details of Stephen's death we can be encouraged in our walk of faith, and find the true strength to go on in the face of hardships.
Sermon 3- Trials and Tribulation
This sermon did not record. It may be recorded at a later date. Sorry.
Sermon 2- Basic Training: Part II
This week we look at the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. We see how God works mightliy when he choses, how he prepares and calls people to himself, and how hearts that have been regenerated by God hear the gospel and repent. We will also see how new believers are given new desires, a new community, and a new life that serves to bring even more people to a faith in Christ.
Sermon 1- Basic Training: Part 1
This week we begin our summer sermon series on the book fo Acts. In this sermon we explore the beginings of the early church. We see how the Holy Spirit will be the force that empowers the Apostles and early disciples, as well as Jesus himself, spurring the mission of God forward.
